Questions and Answers
Why does Ultram make me rather high? I am sensitive to pain medication, and this stuff lasts forever and ? is great. Why switch though, I like it.

The one and only Jolene replied: "Ok I never heard of Tramadol making you high? Basically, it's tramadol and something else. Usually, people don't have any side effects on this. Maybe that feeling is being caused by something else? I would call your doctor and tell them and maybe they can switch to something else."

Aily S replied: "Tramadol used to make me totally buzzy and spaced all at the same time. In fact, it used to do a lot of things bar kill any pain (lol). Maybe you should speak to your doc, you don't want to get addicted to this kind of stuff..."

squeakyweal replied: "I have heard of this happening, but despite considerable experience with Tramadol myself have never felt anything but a mild tingling, and for a relatively short time at that. I don't find it to be very effective, somewhere between acetaminophen (useless, and toxic) and ibuprophen (useful for certain types of pain). While it does mimic the action of opiates and binds to certain opiate receptors, there's no evidence that it's addictive itself. I guess if people are feeling "high" after taking it, there's some potential for psychological addition."

Question about pain medication? I used to take vicodin 750 for my back pain but the doctor just prescribed me a pain medication called ULTRAM. (not ultram er) just regular ultram at 100mg. Has anyone ever used this and does it help with pain?

wildcrzymomof3 replied: "I have taken it and alone it does nothing but if you take it with 1 vicodin 500mg it works great!"

Mike K replied: "I'm guessing by "Vicodin 750" you are referring to a Hydrocodone 7.5mg/750mg preparation... in this case the switching to Ultram is switching the narcotic opioid that you are taking... Instead of taking Hydrocodone you are taking the narcotic opiod Tramadol which has a much weaker affinity bonding with the mu-opioid receptors in your body... To compare both hydrocodone's and tramadol's effectiveness in mu-opioid bonding compared to morphine as a standard Tramadol has 1/6000th affinity of morphine where as hydrocodone has 1/10th the bonding power. Therefore if you had two equal doses of the Vicodin and Ultram the Vicodin is much stronger. However the way that the products are shipped you are taking more milligrams of Tramadol per pill (100mg/pill) than you would get Hydrocodone per pill (7.5mg/pill) so both will get the job done. I've been on both in the past for Severe and Chronic Peripheral Neuropathy stemming from a neurological defect in my spinal cord so for me my pain is so severe neither really helped me all the way but both seemed to help about the same. However everyone is different. Make sure to be honest with your doctor if it is or is not helping with your problem. You want to be made comfortable, but still be able to function in life I know how debilitating pain can be so I wish you the best and I urge you to use the medicine responsibly. I've had to use narcotic opioids for the past 3.5 years secondary to other injection treatments and they can be rough to handle at times. I wish you the best. Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions about my response or if you have other questions on some other pain medications and their effects. Chances are I might have been on them in the past few years."

Is Ultram the best medication for lower back pain? ? It's not real serious pain, but it mostly hurts when I wake up in the morning.

gracie replied: "It really depends. You need to find out what is causing the pain. If it is arthritis, tylenol might work, if it is muscle pain you might need and NSAID or muscle relaxant. If it is a disc problem you might need physical therapy Ultram is a pre ion drug that is similar to opiates like hydrocodone or codeine. Use it only as the doctor tells you and don't take it at times you need to be alert"

michaeljohnkempton replied: "Naproxen is known to help. Ask your doctor about it. Also, try considering sleeping in another position or purchasing an orthopedic pad for your bed. If you have a history of doing exercises such as squats or lifting at your job, knee problems could be a factor in the pain. Make sure you're tackling the right cause first."

ambernericforever replied: "I have alot of back pain. If it is muscular, i use icy hot, or bengay, that stuff is GREAT! if it is bone/joint pain, I use Advil or even Nyquil to help me rest. Try those, and GL!!!!"

DynoDiKk replied: "Ultram is a truly horrible drug in all aspects. you are better off taking real opiates. Type in Ultram sucks on Google and read my friend. and read some of my other answrs, not going through the horrors of this crappy drug again."

Lynn L replied: "It depends, I have a serious back condition, and I have to take muscle relaxers, Ultram, and Percocet. If the pain is really bad, I take Ultram, but if I just cannot take it anymore...like crying really bad pains, that is when I take the Percocet. I would not hurt for you to check with a doctor. Good luck"

Is there anything i can do to ease the hysteria and constant panic attacks from weaning off pain medication ? Im weaning myself off of a very weak pain killer Ultram, although they dont consider it a pain killer, it is indeed a narcotic that i have been on for 5 months, i have been weaning myself off for a week of two, but the panic attacks and depression are interfering with my life and work...what can i do?......im only nineteen, and i take care of myself..i cant lose my job.

I LOVE VICODEN replied: "talk to your dr and explain what ur doing and ask for Xanax to help with the panic attacks It will take the edge off"

Does anyone take ULTRAM or the generic TRAMADOL for pain? I have been taking Ultram/Tramadol now for several months and when I stopped taking the medication I have very serious withdrawl symptoms. The doctors say that it isn't a narcotic, but I am beginning to wonder if that's true or not. They say it works on the opioids in the brain just like a narcotic, so I am confused. Is anyone else having a hard time coming off of this pain medication? Or does anyone have more info on it?

Meg replied: "I took tramadol & had an adverse reaction to it. My Dr said Id be ok to take it even though I am allergic to codeine. (I guess it is chemically similar) I definately did NOT like how I felt when I took it. It took a LONG time for the effects to wear off too. So I don't think it was just you. Sorry I cant be more help, but I didn't stay on it very long."

Edg1 replied: "My wife has peripheral neuropathy and has been taking it for years. If she forgets to take her meds she suffers terrible pain in her feet.Thre is no cure for this."

ghost replied: "A doctor told me it isn't habit forming. I sure like it though, it makes me feel a little drunk, and a little numb. It has the same painful with drawl as opiates. Doctors used to believe cocaine wasn't habit forming either."

Why does no pain medication work for me? I have 3 herniated discs in my lower spine causing nervous pain down my legs. No medication has seemed to work. I have used Tramadol(Ultram), muscle relaxers, Hydrocodone, and now Lyrica but none of them take the pain away and help me sleep. I have seen an Orthopedist and a Neurological doctor as well as had an MRI which I had to be sedated for because laying down hurts.

norton g replied: "Cole, if the neurologist and orthopedic physician cannot provide you with any medicine or non-surgical treatment to relieve your pain, then you have 2 choices. One is to go on stronger pain medicine which could addict you for life, OR to seriously consider surgical treatment, like disc microsurgery to relieve the continuing strong pain caused by the collapsed (herniated) discs Get another opinion, if you wish, but I believe disc surgery may be your only sane option. Good luck."

knox1171 replied: "have they suggested surgery for you? I would definetly go to another doctor and get a second opinion on what can be done for you"

What kind of pain medication would be a good step up from Ultram? A little back info: I had a major car accident in 2006, and came out with what I assumed was nothing more than a seat belt shaped bruise. I declined offers to go to the emergency room, as I thought I was fine, but a few days after I found that I was in increasingly bad back pain. By the time I found a doctor and was put through physical therapy, most of the muscles in my cervical and thoratic spine had atrophied to some degree, and this limits my mobility and gives me daily pain. Since 2006 I have been on both Ultram and Flexeril to control pain, but they are both doing a whole lot of nothing. I plan on seeing my doctor today- how should I approach the topic of receiving stronger pain meds without seeming like a junkie? It's not as if I'm asking to be on morphine... I just want to be able to do things my peers are doing. Being 20 and in pain all the time is pretty depressing.

DynoDiKk replied: "You need to be off that Ultram Period! It is a shitty drug! Type in Ultram sucks on Google. Tootsie, no one is calling you a junkie. Hydrocodone would be the next logical choice. And or morphine, believe it or not morphine should be used before the hydro even in a long term situation, and time release morphine. If you can tolerate it! Hydro hits harder. Ultram is the worse drug in the world to be on, read this article I wrote on it. "

justinfranksnj replied: "The next step up could probably be codeine or hydrocodone. Just tell your doctor that lately you've been in a lot more pain and that you have had to severely limit your activities and hobbies because of the pain. Explain how the pain is negatively affecting your daily life and that the Ultram and Flexeril just is not working well in bringing your pain down to a manageable level. It may take some time to figure out which medication and dosage works the best for your specific pain. It took several months, almost a year, for my pain management doctor and myself to come up with a treatment plan that was successful in keeping my pain under control. Be patient, but if your current doctor seems unwilling to prescribe medications that work (many doctors are leery of prescribing stronger opioids, especially to young patients), I would recommend seeking out another doctor. It's not 'doctor shopping' if you switch doctors, that is only a problem if you are seeing multiple doctors at the same time and receiving pre ions from each of them (and none of them know about the others)."

pain relief medicine ultram? Just started taking this 24 hour pain medication called Ultram. I experienced some side effects that included heart racing, tongue felt swollen, sweating, chills, headache, nausea, anxiety (freaked out pretty bad). I just wanted to know if anyone else has taken this medication and has had the same side effects and if these side effects are common, life threatning, etc. testimonials on this would be great no worries im going to contact my physician as soon as possible. thank you all in advance for your help and support

monstermax1 replied: "Hi, Had the same thing, can't take them. Switched to morphine as codeine tears up the stomach."

deadsqirrl replied: "If your tongue is swelling, I would call that an allergic reaction. Stop taking the medication and call your doctor. I took this medication and did feel kinda like I was on speed or something and my head would feel full of pressure. The pressure in my head and the fact that it did not work too well for my pain made me stop taking it. It sounds to me from your reaction that this med is not an appropriate one for you. There are plenty of alternatives for pain control so I would ask the doctor for something different. In anycase with a swollen tongue you should get medical attention quickly. If the tongue were to swell enough it could block off your airway. It is important to get some medication to ounteract the allergic reaction if the problem is severe enough. If you had an anaphylactic shock reaction it could be life threatening. Your doctor can determine what treatment course of action is needed. Good Luck."

Whats the best long term pain medication for degenerative disk disease? i now take tramodol but i think i take to much. Should i try ultram er so i only take one pill a day?

Superfly replied: "Gee, ask your family doc for this Q. Don't even try to get an answer from forum like this. You see, pain medicine is not just pain medicine. Every drug has potential side effect. AND every drug CERTAINLY has long-term effects. To choose the right pain killer for yourself, your family doc has to consider your medical history and current conditions, along with your family history etc. Drug X may work wonder for your next door neighbor Joe. It may kill you in half a year. Give your doc a call instead of asking this Q here. It is for your own good."
